Your Calendar For The Lunar Events Of 2017 Is Here. Everyone of us must have, at one point or another, questioned the meaning and purpose of life. February 20, 2017 February 21, 2017. So I was very happy to welcome 2017, not an election year. It did make me think, however, about what a wonderful gift a New Year is. From what little we've seen of 2017. What is the meaning of life? Question: ? How can purpose, fulfillment, and satisfaction in life be found? How can something of lasting significance be achieved? So many people have never stopped to consider these important questions. They look back years later and wonder why their relationships have fallen apart and why they feel so empty, even though they may have achieved what they set out to accomplish. An athlete who had reached the pinnacle of his sport was once asked what he wished someone would have told him when he first started playing his sport. Some of these pursuits include business success, wealth, good relationships, sex, entertainment, and doing good to others. People have testified that while they achieved their goals of wealth, relationships, and pleasure, there was still a deep void inside, a feeling of emptiness that nothing seemed to fill. The author of the biblical book of Ecclesiastes describes this feeling when he says, ! Everything is meaningless. King Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, had wealth beyond measure, wisdom beyond any man of his time or ours, hundreds of women, palaces and gardens that were the envy of kingdoms, the best food and wine, and every form of entertainment available. He said at one point that anything his heart wanted, he pursued. And yet he summed up . Why is there such a void? Because God created us for something beyond what we can experience in the here- and- now. Solomon said of God, . In our hearts we are aware that the . This means that we are more like God than we are like anything else (any other life form). We also find that before mankind fell into sin and the curse of sin came upon the earth, the following things were true: 1) God made man a social creature (Genesis 2: 1. God gave man work (Genesis 2: 1. God had fellowship with man (Genesis 3: 8); and 4) God gave man dominion over the earth (Genesis 1: 2. What is the significance of these things? God intended for each of these to add to our fulfillment in life, but all of these (especially man's fellowship with God) were adversely affected by man's fall into sin and the resulting curse upon the earth (Genesis 3). In Revelation, the last book of the Bible, God reveals that He will destroy this present earth and heavens and usher in the eternal state by creating a new heaven and a new earth. At that time, He will restore full fellowship with redeemed mankind, while the unredeemed will have been judged unworthy and cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 2. The curse of sin will be done away with; there will be no more sin, sorrow, sickness, death, or pain (Revelation 2. God will dwell with them, and they shall be His sons (Revelation 2. Thus, we come full circle: God created us to have fellowship with Him, man sinned, breaking that fellowship, God restores that fellowship fully in the eternal state. To go through life achieving everything only to die separated from God for eternity would be worse than futile! But God has made a way to not only make eternal bliss possible (Luke 2. How is this eternal bliss and . That relationship with God is only possible through His Son, Jesus Christ (Acts 4: 1. John 1: 1. 2; 1. 4: 6). Salvation and eternal life are gained when we trust in Jesus Christ as Savior. Once that salvation is received by faith, Christ changes us, making us new creations, and we begin the progressive journey of growing closer to Him and learning to rely on Him. Real meaning in life is not found only in accepting Jesus as Savior, as wonderful as that is. Rather, real meaning in life is when one begins to follow Christ as His disciple, learning of Him, spending time with Him in His Word, communing with Him in prayer, and in walking with Him in obedience to His commands. If you are not a Christian (or perhaps a new believer), you might be saying to yourself, . Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. We can continue to seek to guide our own lives, which results in emptiness, or we can choose to pursue God and His will for our lives with a whole heart, which will result in living life to the full, having the desires of our hearts met, and finding contentment and satisfaction. This is so because our Creator loves us and desires the best for us (not necessarily the easiest life, but the most fulfilling). The Christian life can be compared to the choice of whether to purchase the expensive seats at a sporting event that are close to the action, or pay less and watch the game from a distance. Watching God work firsthand is for whole- hearted disciples of Christ who have truly stopped pursuing their own desires to pursue instead God's purposes. They have paid the price (complete surrender to Christ and His will); they are experiencing life to its fullest; and they can face themselves, their fellow man, and their Maker with no regrets. Have you paid the price? If so, you will not hunger after meaning or purpose again. Meg Steedle, Actress: Boardwalk Empire. Not helping the decision was the fact that the modestly rated show hailed from an outside studio in WBTV. The returns — despite NBC Entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt's affinity for Smash grad Messing — weren't enough to score a third season. NBC tried its hand with another female- driven procedural — hospital set Heartbeat — in the slot after Laura's sophomore run ended, but the freshman drama produced in- house by Universal Television fared worse than the WBTV entry. Both series have now been canceled. With the cancellation, Berlanti will head into 2. The CW's Riverdale to make up for Laura's demise. For his part, Kaplan scored a renewal for CBS' Life in Pieces and pickup for ABC series The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport. The fate of NBC's The Carmichael Show — which remains on the bubble — remains unclear as talks for season two continue through the weekend. Laura joins fellow canceled dramas at NBC including Game of Silence, Heartbeat, The Player and Heroes Reborn. On the flipside, the network picked up new hourlongs including Taken, Chicago Justice, Timeless, The Blacklist: Redemption and Midnight, Texas. The moon's orbit carries it between the earth and sun and sits in the same region of the sky where the sun is. Sunlight is only reaching the side of the moon that is turned away from us, so as a consequence it cannot be seen. Due to the moon's tilted orbit, it usually passes above or below the sun, instead of eclipsing the sun. Starting a day or two after new moon, you might catch a glimpse of the slender sliver of a waxing crescent moon low near the western horizon, as it gradually pulls away from the sun's vicinity and shifts toward the east. The trio will make a nice widefield photo opportunity. Use binoculars or a telescope to hunt for Uranus 2 degrees below Mars and dwarf planet Ceres sitting 1. Mars. Saturday, March 4 evening – Moon kisses Aldebaran. In the western sky during late evening on Saturday, March 4, observers in the continental USA will see the first quarter moon briefly pass in front of the naked eye star Aldebaran in Taurus. The dark leading edge of the moon will cover the star first (shown here for NYC at 1. EST), and then it will emerge from the opposite illuminated limb some time later. Times and duration vary by region, so observers should begin to watch before 1. EST. Other areas will merely see the moon graze the star, or pass near to it. Tuesday, Mar. 2. 7, after evening twilight – Zodiacal Light. During moonless periods in February and March annually, the steep evening ecliptic favors the appearance of the zodiacal light in the western sky for about half an hour after evening twilight ends. This is reflected sunlight from interplanetary particles of matter concentrated in the plane of the solar system. Once it's dark, during the two weeks preceding the new moon on March 2. Mars) for a broad wedge of faint light rising from the horizon. It will be centered on the ecliptic (marked by green line). Tuesday, March 1. Moon meets Jupiter. Starting in late evening on Tuesday, March 1. Jupiter and the waning gibbous moon will rise together in the eastern sky about 9: 4. With the moon less than 4 degrees to the lower left of the planet, they'll fit within a binocular field of view and make a nice photo opportunity. As they slowly draw apart, the pair will cross the night sky together and be visible low in the southwestern sky before sunrise. Monday, March 2. 0 pre- dawn – Moon meets Saturn. Low in the eastern sky in the hours before dawn on Monday, March 2. Saturn. With Saturn rising at 2: 3. Monday, March 2. 0 at 6: 2. EDT – Vernal Equinox. On Monday, March 2. The sun crosses the celestial equator traveling north, marking the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of Spring. Days and nights are of equal length. The sun rises due east and sets due west. Saturday, Mar 2. 5 and Sunday, Mar 2. Mercury near Uranus. As the planet Mercury climbs the western evening sky in late March, it will pass close to distant Uranus. Mercury will sit 2 degrees to the right of Uranus, and then climb slightly higher the following evening. The best observing times are between 8: 1. Mercury should be readily visible with unaided eyes. Uranus will require binoculars or a telescope. During the month, it approaches Earth – causing its disk to increase in diameter, while dropping in brightness, and waning from a nearly full disk to half illuminated. On March 1. 8 and 1. Venus passes 9 degrees to the north (right) of Mercury. On March 2. 5, Mercury moves to sit about 2 degrees to the north (right) of Uranus, with the pair of planets best seen between 8: 3. On March 2. 9, the young crescent moon will be sitting 9 degrees to the upper left of Mercury. Peak visibility occurs at month's end with Mercury approaching greatest eastern elongation from the sun. Around mid- month, it will rapidly descend sunward into the evening twilight. While it heads towards inferior conjunction on March 2. Venus' disk will grow in diameter and wanes to a thin crescent. For a few days around this conjunction, it can be glimpsed in the morning and the evening twilight. On March 1. 8 and 1. Venus passes 9 degrees to the north (right) of much fainter Mercury. At the end of March, Venus will be visible in the east for about 4. It continues to drop in brightness and disk size as we pull farther away from it. On March 1, the crescent moon will sit 5 degrees to the left of Mars, and on March 3. As March begins, the planet rises in the east about 9: 3. But, by the end of the month, Jupiter rises around 8: 1. April. On March 1. Throughout March, it can be spotted low in the southeastern sky until just before dawn. In late March, Saturn rises about 2: 3. On Monday morning, March 2. Saturn. During March, it is descending sunwards in the southwestern evening sky among the stars of Pisces. For the first half of March, it remains observable from nightfall until mid evening, after which it becomes lost in the western twilight. Neptune, in the constellation of Aquarius all month, reaches conjunction with the sun on March 1 and is invisible all month. It is moving within the constellation of Gemini, ranging between 2. Pollux. It's easy to measure distances between objects: Your fist on an outstretched arm covers about 1. Visual Magnitude: This is the astronomer's scale for measuring the brightness of objects in the sky. The dimmest object visible in the night sky under perfectly dark conditions is about magnitude 6. Brighter stars are magnitude 2 or 1. The brightest objects get negative numbers. Venus can be as bright as magnitude minus 4. The full moon is minus 1. Terminator: The boundary on the moon between sunlight and shadow. Zenith: The point in the sky directly overhead. But to fully enjoy the heavens — especially a meteor shower, the constellations, or to see the amazing swath across the sky that represents our view toward the center of the Milky Way Galaxy — rural areas are best for night sky viewing. If you're stuck in a city or suburban area, a building can be used to block ambient light (or moonlight) to help reveal fainter objects. If you're in the suburbs, simply turning off outdoor lights can help. Prepare for skywatching: If you plan to be out for more than a few minutes, and it's not a warm summer evening, dress warmer than you think necessary. An hour of observing a winter meteor shower can chill you to the bone. A blanket or lounge chair will prove much more comfortable than standing or sitting in a chair and craning your neck to see overhead. Daytime skywatching: When Venus is visible (that is, not in front of or behind the sun) it can often be spotted during the day. But you'll need to know where to look. When the sun has large sunspots, they can be seen without a telescope. However, it's unsafe to look at the sun without protective eyewear. See our video on how to safely observe the sun, or our safe sunwatching infographic. Also find out when is the next full moon. Norval Pit- Stop. THE FIGHT IS NOT OVERFebruary 2. The Ontario Municipal Board has scheduled a pre- hearing conference on the appeal by Brampton Brick of their zoning by- law application to permit a shale quarry on the east side of Winston Churchill Boulevard, north of Old Pine Crest Road in the City of Brampton. The Pre- Hearing Conference is scheduled for June 1. Council Chambers at Brampton City Hall with overflow seating provided in the West Tower Atrium. Thanks to all those that came out in support! A copy of the Recommendation Report can be viewed/downloaded by clicking here. Welcome to The Pit Rib House, where the food is so good because it's cooked with wood. We've mastered the art of barbecue. Be part of the pit crew and follow the instructions to execute a pit stop! This area follows the Credit River watershed and its tributaries and wetlands, but is under stress from growing urban development. The Credit River is cold water fish habitat, a wildlife movement corridor, within a Provincially significant wetland. The Greenbelt around Norval is in close proximity to the growing urban areas of North West Brampton & Georgetown, and performs a significant ecological function. Locating a quarry in this area is not a good choice of sites. The proposed aggregate extraction area is in close proximity to the historic Village of Norval, a recognised tourism area, and an existing community.
